Withdrawal: The Social Retreat Cycle
Why we suddenly drop out of social life after overload or shame; understanding the internal 'Reboot' needs.
The Safety of the Cave
Withdrawal is the act of suddenly cutting off communication and "retreating into your cave." This can include not answering the phone, missing meetings, and staying home for weeks. To others, this looks like "laziness" or "depression." To the neurodivergent brain, it is Life Support.
According to Damla Kuduoğlu, withdrawal often happens after a "Social Error" (like oversharing) or a massive sensory overload. The resulting Shame Spiral makes the idea of "being seen" physically painful. You hide until your nervous system feels "safe" again.
The Fix for Friends: Don't ask *"Why are you being so anti-social?"* Instead, say: *"I see you're in your cave. I'm here when you're ready to come back out. No rush, no guilt."*
