Why Do Our Batteries Drain Differently?: The Spoon Theory
A fundamental metaphor explaining how individuals with ADHD start every day with limited energy (spoons) and how even small actions can quickly deplete them.
What is Spoon Theory?
The "Spoon Theory" (widely used in the neurodivergent community) is a metaphor describing daily energy limits for individuals with ADHD, Autism, or Chronic Fatigue. While neurotypical individuals may feel as though they have an endless reservoir of energy, those with neurodivergence wake up with a countable number of "spoons."
Every morning, the number of spoons you have is unpredictable. Some days you might have 10; other days, only 2. Even simple tasks like brushing your teeth, choosing an outfit, or making a phone call take away a spoon. If you run out of spoons by noon, you are forced to spend the rest of the day "borrowing" energy through intense masking, which inevitably "steals" spoons from the next day.
