What is Twice Exceptionality (2e)?

The Double Challenge: The 2e Paradox

Twice-Exceptionality (2e) refers to individuals who possess both high intellectual potential (giftedness) and a co-occurring learning or neurodevelopmental difference (such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, or Dysgraphia).

The most characteristic trait of a 2e individual is Asynchronous Development. This means their cognitive, social, and emotional systems develop at different speeds. A 2e child might be able to explain the physics of a black hole but struggle to tie their own shoelaces or handle the sound of a vacuum cleaner.

The greatest risk for 2e individuals is the "Average Effect." Their high intelligence often compensates for their struggles, making them look "average" or "lazy" to teachers and parents. This results in them receiving neither the advanced enrichment they need for their gifts nor the specialized support they need for their challenges.
