The neurodiversity paradigm recognizes conditions like autism, ADHD, and dyslexia as natural, valuable structural variations of the human brain. These neurodevelopmental conditions begin in utero and remain stable throughout a person's life.
Psychosis, rather than being an innate neurodevelopmental identity, is an episodic psychiatric state characterized by acute phases and periods of recovery. An autistic or ADHD individual perceives the world through different sensory thresholds and interprets social cues uniquely, but does not lose their "reality testing" capacity. During a psychotic episode, however, the brain's cognitive filtering systems temporarily fail, leading the mind to interpret internal thoughts as external reality.
