Unmasking Journey: Returning to the Authentic Self
The process of dropping masking (camouflaging) behaviors and discovering true neurological needs and identity.
Alchemy of Diagnosis: From Defect to Identity
An AuDHD diagnosis received in adulthood allows the individual to rewrite their entire life story. When viewed from the perspective of Schema Therapy, the pre-diagnosis period is usually under the absolute dominance of the "Defectiveness/Shame" schema: "I can't succeed in the simple life that everyone else succeeds in, which means I am broken."
Unmasking is the most radical way to break this schema. Instead of spending energy to "look normal," the individual begins to use that energy to "design a life that suits them." As Özenç Ertan Öztekin states, this is not a process of "recovery," but a process of "liberation." The individual no longer defines themselves as a "broken neurotypical," but as a "complete and authentic neurodivergent."
Combating Internalized Ableism: The individual, who reflects society's view of neurodivergence onto themselves, must learn to silence the voice that says "I should be like everyone else." Unmasking is choosing to live for your own sensory and cognitive comfort, not for others.

Safe Steps of Dropping the Mask
Unmasking does not happen overnight and may not be safe in every environment (e.g., at work). Strategic unmasking starts by allowing natural bodily movements (stimming) and honest communication in "safe spaces" (at home, with close friends) first.
Emerging from the Cocoon: As the individual learns to defend their boundaries (e.g., "The noise is too much right now, I'm going to put on my headphones") and say "no," the chronic pressure on the nervous system lifts. In this process, support from a neuro-affirming therapist or community is vital for the individual to get rid of the delusions of "abnormality."
