The Cost of Shifting
For a monotropic mind, an Attention Tunnel is deep and high-walled. Entering or exiting this tunnel requires a significant amount of "activation energy." This is the root of Autistic Inertia: the tendency to remain in a state of rest (struggling to start) or a state of motion (struggling to stop).
When a transition is forced (e.g., being told to "stop playing and come to dinner"), it feels like a violent disruption to the nervous system. The mind has to "dismantle" its entire current tunnel and "rebuild" a new one from scratch. This Task Recovery Cost is why transitions are often the most stressful part of the day for monotropic individuals.
Strategies like "visual countdowns," "transition objects," or allowing for a "buffer period" between tasks can help mitigate the impact. Understanding that inertia is a neurological reality, not a lack of cooperation, is the first step toward better management.
