Viewing Schizophrenia Through the Neurodiversity Lens
Traditional psychiatry defines schizophrenia exclusively through a pathology and deficit lens. However, the neurodiversity movement has begun to conceptualize the schizophrenia spectrum as another atypical and distinct way of human cognitive processing. From this perspective, the unique perceptual differences experienced by individuals on the schizophrenia spectrum reflect the vast boundaries and diversity of human consciousness.
A neuro-affirming, social model of disability advocates against institutional isolation or forcing individuals to perform "neurotypical" compliance. Instead, it promotes designing support ecosystems that reduce sensory distress, protect safe housing rights, and respect their lived experiences.

Biological Commonalities Among Autism, ADHD, and Schizophrenia
Over the past decade, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have proven a massive genetic overlap between autism, ADHD, and the schizophrenia spectrum. It has been observed that identical genetic variants (pleiotropy), interacting with diverse environmental inputs and developmental stages, can manifest as autism, ADHD, or schizophrenia.
Neurobiologically, all three neuro-types display distinct functioning in the brain's Default Mode Network (DMN) and Salience Network (which prioritizes environmental stimuli). Additionally, sensory gating—the neural process of filtering out redundant noise, light, and information—is atypically reduced in both autism and schizophrenia. This explains why both groups experience intense vulnerability to sensory overload.
