The Neurotypical Communication Guide: A Translation
For the neurodivergent brain: Decoding why non-ND people use hints, subtext, and 'small talk' to build safety.
Decoding the 'Social Vibe'
For a neurodivergent person, Small Talk is like a computer error. *"Why are we talking about the weather? We both have eyes; we can see it's raining!"* To a neurotypical (NT) person, however, small talk is a "Safety Ritual." They aren't sharing info; they are doing a "Vibe Check" to see if you are a safe person to be around.
The Translator's Notes:
The Hint: When an NT person says *"That's a very interesting idea,"* they might mean *"I think that won't work, but I don't want to hurt your feelings."*
The Praise Sandwich: If someone says *"I loved your energy, but the report needs fixing, although you're doing great,"* the ONLY part they really want you to hear is the middle part. The rest is just "Social Padding."
Eye Contact: They aren't trying to stare into your soul; they are just checking to see if you are still "plugged in" to the conversation.
By understanding that NT communication is about Emotional Harmony rather than Data Transfer, we can reduce the frustration of "Why don't they just say what they mean?"
