The Neurodiverse Communication Guide
A survival manual for bridging the gap between literal and implied communication styles.
Literal Words vs. Hidden Meanings
The most common clash in neurodiverse couples or workplaces is the "Hint vs. Statement" battle.
The Hint (NT Style): *"It's getting kind of late, isn't it?"* (Meaning: I want you to go home now).
The Statement (ND Interpretation): *"Yes, it is late. It's 10 PM."* (Result: The ND person stays, and the NT person gets angry).
The Guide to Success:
1. Stop Guessing: If you are ND, tell people: *"I don't 'catch' hints well. If you need something, please use direct labels."*
2. Explicit Intent: If you are NT, add the intent to the sentence: *"It's late, so I'd like to end the meeting now."*
3. Positive Literalness: Realize that directness is a form of Honesty and Safety. It removes the anxiety of "What did they really mean?"
