The Invisible Struggle: ADHD and Masking in Women
Examines how women hide their symptoms due to societal pressure to conform and how this prevents them from receiving a diagnosis until their 30s or 40s.
Why Do Women Get Diagnosed Late?
As often noted by advocates such as neuro.diary.tr; girls tend to internalize hyperactivity (expressed through racing thoughts or habits like nail biting) rather than projecting it onto the outside world (like running or jumping). The societal expectation of being a "compliant girl" causes these individuals to hide their symptoms with extreme effort—a process known as Masking.
This masking is often so successful that a woman who appears "meticulous, successful, and calm" from the outside might actually be pushing her nervous system to the brink of collapse every day just to manage the chaos inside her brain. The resulting Neuro-Burnout that typically arrives in the 30s happens when the mask finally becomes too heavy to carry.
