The Inability to Set Boundaries in ADHD
Why the ADHD brain struggles to identify and enforce its own limits until it's too late.
The 'Yes' Reflex
If you have ADHD, your "No" button is often broken.
Reasons for Boundary Failure:
1. Impulsivity: Someone asks for a favor, and your brain says "YES!" before your logic can check your calendar. You are chasing the dopamine of being helpful.
2. RSD (Rejection Sensitivity): You believe that if you say "No," the other person will hate you, leave you, or see you as "useless."
3. Low Self-Worth: You feel you haven't "earned" the right to have boundaries because you are "so messy/late/forgetful."
The fix: Move your "No" into a Mechanical Action.
Instead of deciding in the moment, have a standard response: *"I'd love to help, but I need to sleep on it for 24 hours before I commit."* This bypasses the impulse and gives your boundary time to form.
