De-pathologizing social differences; why communication gaps are a two-way street between neurotypes.

Part 2: Empathy Overload vs. Deficiency
Contrary to popular belief, neurodivergent people often suffer from Empathy Overload (hyper-empathy). To the outside world, this looks like being "cold" or "unfeeling." In reality, it is the result of attempting to manage an internal "emotional tsunami." Sometimes, feelings are experienced so intensely that the nervous system short-circuits, resulting in no external emotional feedback. This is not due to a lack of empathy, but rather an overload of it that prevents system regulation.

Part 3: Body Doubling and Social Motivation
When task initiation feels impossible for the ADHD brain, Body Doubling emerges as a highly effective tool. This method relies on the simple principle of having someone else in the same room (reading, working, or just sitting) while you perform a task.
The key here is not for the other person to monitor or interfere, but simply to "be there." The presence of another person slightly raises dopamine levels in the brain, fostering focus, and shifts the nervous system into a constructive arousal mode through a sense of accountability. This serves as a social scaffolding that breaks the inertia of isolation.

Part 4: Building Bridges: Neuro-Affirming Strategies
Overcoming the Double Empathy Problem is not about trying to make the neurodivergent individual "more normal," but rather about both sides learning each other's "language." In relationships and workplaces, a "Clear Communication Protocol" should be implemented. Providing clear expectations (Expectation Clarity) instead of indirect hints reduces the cognitive load for the neurodivergent individual while easing the neurotypical's frustration of "Why don't they get it?"
Real empathy is not expecting the other person to feel "just like us," but respecting their right to feel "different from us." This is a social adaptation requirement based on systemic and mutual interaction, where the adaptation burden should be shared 50/50 rather than placed 100% on the neurodivergent individual.
