The ADHD Iceberg: The Invisible Struggle
Deep neurological challenges hidden behind visible symptoms.
The Invisible Struggle
What the public sees (the tip of the iceberg) often includes talking too much, losing items, or an inability to sit still. What the individual actually experiences (underwater) includes executive function paralysis, time blindness, rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD), sensory overload, and masking fatigue.
To truly understand an individual with ADHD, one must focus not just on external behavior but on the internal chaos that triggers that behavior.

Empathy and Communication
The iceberg metaphor is a bridge for neurotypical friends and family. It provides the best answer to the question, "Why can't you just try a little harder?": "The disorganization you see is actually the result of me struggling to survive a massive storm underwater (executive dysfunction)."
Recognizing these invisible challenges lightens the burden of being misunderstood and creates a supportive environment in relationships.
