What is Tendril Theory?
Developed within neurodivergent communities, Tendril Theory is a powerful metaphor that explains how monotropic minds (ADHD, Autism, AuDHD) engage with tasks and why they experience intense friction during transitions. According to this theory, when a monotropic brain focuses on a topic, it does so by extending hundreds of thin plant-like tendrils from the mind to wrap around, grasp, and submerge into the task.
While neurotypical minds can easily shift their focus from one topic to another like a flashlight beam, a monotropic brain requires time to extend its tendrils, secure them to the target, and enter a state of deep flow. Once these tendrils are fully attached, the individual gains access to an extraordinary capacity for information processing, creativity, and deep analysis (hyperfocus).
