Task Switching and Transitions
Why 'Stopping one thing' and 'Starting another' is physically painful for the ADHD nervous system.
The Law of Mental Inertia
Transitioning between tasks is where many ADHD people "Break."
If you are "Moving" (Hyper-focusing on a game) and you have to "Stop" to go to dinner, your brain experiences a massive Drop in Dopamine. This drop feels like physical Pain or Loss. This is why children (and adults) often get "Ragey" when asked to switch tasks suddenly.
How to 'Grease the Wheels' of Transition:
1. Buffer Zones: Give yourself a "Transition Minute." Don't go from sofa to desk. Stand up, walk around, listen to one song. This is the "Mental Clutch" of your car.
2. Countdown Alarms: Use a timer that shows you "Time is Running Out." (e.g., *'10 minutes left of focus'*). This allows the brain to begin the "Shutdown sequence" slowly.
3. Dopamine Bridges: Start the next task with something you LIKE. (e.g., *"I will go to the desk, and the first thing I do is drink my favorite tea while I open the computer."*)
