Sustainable ADHD Friendships
How to maintain long-term connections while managing time-blindness, out-of-sight-out-of-mind, and RSD.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
In ADHD, the concept of "Object Permanence" often extends to relationships. If we aren't seeing or interacting with someone daily, our brain "archives" their importance, not out of malice, but due to a focus on the immediate present.
This leads to the Social Ghosting Tax. You realize you haven't spoken to a close friend in 6 months, and the resulting shame prevents you from reaching out. You assume they hate you (RSD), when they might just be waiting for a hello.
Sustainable Strategies:
The 'Low-Pressure' Policy: Tell your friends: "I might go dark for weeks, but I still love you. Feel free to double-text me."
Scheduled Reminders: Use technology to remind you to "human"—set a recurring task to reach out to 3 people every Tuesday.
Voice Notes: If typing feels like an executive function hurdle, send a 30-second voice note.
