Sports with Body Doubling
The most powerful weapon used by ADHD brains to maintain consistency in sports: the Body Doubling method.
Why Can't We Get Moving on Our Own?
The biggest misconception of individuals with ADHD is waiting to "feel motivated" before starting something. However, in ADHD neurology, the production of "internal motivation" is significantly impaired. You sit in an armchair thinking *"I need to get up and exercise, it's so important for my health"* (logic), but your body feels like it weighs a ton and can't get up (task paralysis).
This is where Body Doubling comes in. Body doubling is the "presence" of another person in the same physical space (or virtual environment) as you, who is either busy with their own task or the same task as you. This person doesn't need to give you directions; just being there activates the mirror neurons in the ADHD brain and provides the "external motivation" you need.

How to Apply Body Doubling in Sports
The biggest secret to maintaining consistency in sports is not relying on your own internal discipline, but "hacking" the system. You need to create an external accountability that will get you out of bed or off the couch.
1. Workout Buddy:
This is the most classic body doubling method. You find it a hassle to go to the gym alone, but if a friend is waiting for you at the door, not wanting to disappoint them (or sometimes the fear of RSD) gets you out that door. You don't even need to talk while working out with your friend; walking side by side on treadmills is enough.
2. Group Classes (Group Fitness):
Wandering alone in the weights section is boring for the ADHD brain and requires planning. But group classes like Pilates, Zumba, Spinning, or Crossfit are a perfect body doubling environment. The instructor tells you what to do (executive function tax is zeroed out) and there are 20 people around you doing the exact same movement at the exact same time as you. Thanks to herd psychology and mirror neurons, you can't give up even when you're tired.
3. Virtual Body Doubling:
If you want to exercise at home but can't get started, open "Follow Along" workout videos on YouTube. Trainers who don't just show you what to do but sweat through the entire workout with you (timed) serve as a virtual body double. You can also connect cameralessly at the same time with neurodivergent communities on Twitch or Discord and organize joint exercise sessions.

> Just "being there" is 90% of it. If you have no energy when you go to the gym with your body double, just lie down on the mat. In all likelihood, the activity around you will rub off on you within 5 minutes and you'll start doing something.
