Social Scripting and Scenario Writing
The 'Invisible Rehearsal': Why we plan conversations hours before they happen and- the cost of social perfectionism.
40 Rehearsals Before a Word
For many with ADHD and Autism (especially the AuDHD profile), socializing is not a "natural flow"—it is a Scripted Performance.
Social Scripting is the act of planning out exactly what you will say, which jokes you will use, and how you will answer "How are you?" hours before a social event happens. You are building a "Mental Library" of responses so you aren't caught off guard.
The Danger: If the other person says something unexpected (e.g., they ask a personal question instead of the expected greeting), the "Script" fails. The brain enters a Processing Loop (the "Uh... um..." state) because it doesn't have a file for that specific interaction. This is why many ND people prefer text or emails—it gives them time to "Script" their response without the 2-second deadline of a face-to-face talk.
