Social ADHD in the Workplace
Navigating office politics, small talk, and the 'Too Much' energy in a professional setting.
The Unwritten Office Rules
The workplace is 50% work and 50% Social Navigation. For the ADHD brain, the "Social" half can be harder than the job itself.
Office Politics Blindness: We often treat everyone equally, from the CEO to the intern. To us, this is fairness; to a hierarchical boss, it can look like "lack of respect." We often miss the "hidden meaning" behind a manager's vague feedback.
Strategies for the Office:
The 'Clarification' Email: After a meeting, send an email: *"To confirm my understanding, the priority for this week is X, right?"* This protects you from subtext errors.
The 'Social Buffer': You don't have to join every happy hour. Pick one social event a month and "perform" for that hour, then go home to recharge.
Transparency: If you are comfortable, tell your team: *"I'm a literal thinker—if you need something, please be direct with me!"*
