Sibling Rivalry and ADHD
Addressing the 'Unfairness' and conflict between neurotypical and neurodivergent siblings.
Fairness isn't Sameness
In a house with ADHD, the sibling without ADHD often feels like they are being held to a higher standard. *"Why does he get to yell, but I don't?"* is a common cry.
The Equity Lesson: Parents must teach that Equity (matching the support to the need) is the goal, not Equality (giving everyone the same).
To prevent sibling rivalry:
1. Educate the Sibling: Explain that ADHD is like a "broken brake" in the brain. It's not that the brother is "bad"; his brain just hasn't learned to stop yet.
2. Protected Time: Ensure the neurotypical sibling has 15 minutes of "uninterrupted parent time" every day where ADHD is not discussed.
3. The 'Helper' Trap: Do not force the NT sibling to be a "junior parent." They deserve to just be a child.
