Shutdown: The System Moving into Self-Protection
The state of the nervous system 'withdrawing' and becoming silent by cutting off communication with the outside world during moments of sensory or emotional overload.
The Shutdown Experience: Flipping the Circuit Breaker
While a Meltdown is a radical outward discharge of energy, a Shutdown is an inward collapse. Just as a computer shuts down to protect itself when it overheats, a neurodivergent brain "pulls the plug" when it receives too much stimuli or social pressure.
In this state, an individual may be unable to speak, their movements may slow down, or they may remain completely motionless (a semi-catatonic state). As noted by advocates like Damla Kuduoğlu, trying to force the individual to talk or asking "What's wrong?" during these moments only increases the pressure. The only medicine is time, silence, and an environment free of sensory stimuli.
