Design Elements of Sensory Walls
1. Tactile Diversity: Blend smooth wood, soft felt, rough sandpaper, corrugated plastics, Velcro tapes, and plush fabrics side-by-side. For children experiencing tactile defensiveness, interacting with these surfaces serves as a safe tool for gradual sensory desensitization.
2. Fine Motor Manipulation: Integrate locks, zippers, latches, spinning wheels, gears, and large buttons onto the board. Manipulating these objects satisfies tactile curiosity while triggering dopamine release associated with task completion.
3. Vertical Coordinates: Adjust the height of the panels to cover a range from the child's crouching height to their standing reach. This encourages core engagement, stretching, and balance training.
