Schema Therapy and Neurodiversity Integration
A clinical look at- adapting Schema Therapy (ST) for Autistic and ADHD adults: Healing the 'Outsider' trauma.
Healing the 'Chronic Mismatch'
Schema Therapy (ST) was designed to treat deep, personality-level pain. For the neurodivergent individual, this pain often comes from a "Chronic Mismatch" between their brain and their environment.
According to experts like Özenç Ertan Öztekin, an ND-integrated Schema Therapy approach must:
1. Validate the Biology: The therapist must acknowledge that "forgetfulness" is a symptom, not a "Self-Sacrifice" schema.
2. Imagery Rescripting: Helping the client revisit childhood "Failure" moments and providing them with the Neuro-Affirming parent they needed back then.
3. Mode Management: Identifying when the "Impulsive Child" (ADHD dopamine-seeking) is taking the wheel, and helping the "Healthy Adult" guide them safely back.
The goal isn't to "fix" the person, but to help them build a Healthy Adult voice that understands how to manage their unique "Neuro-Operating System."
