Rumination and Mental Loops
Why the ADHD brain gets 'Stuck' on a repeating negative thought and how to break the 'Hyper-focus on Fear.'
Trapped in the 'Should-Have'
Rumination is when your brain "Chews" on a negative thought over and over, like an old piece of gum. For an ADHD brain, this is a form of Internal Hyper-focus.
Because your "Stop" signal is weak, once your brain starts thinking *"I shouldn't have said that to the boss,"* it doesn't know how to stop. It repeats the conversation 1,000 times, searching for a "Solution" that doesn't exist.
Breaking the Loop:
1. Somatic Disruption: You cannot "Think" your way out of a loop. You must Shock your body. A cold shower, a 1-minute sprint, or a very loud song. This "Interrupts" the neural circuit.
2. Externalization: Write the thought down. Once it is on the paper, tell your brain: *"Okay, it's safe now. We won't forget it. You can stop looping."*
3. Active Distraction: Engage your brain in a high-demand task (like a puzzle or a video game). You need a Stronger Dopamine Source to pull your attention away from the "Fear Loop."
