Reward Systems: Why Punishment Fails ADHD
Why 'Consequences' don't work for ADHD brains and how to build positive 'Dopamine Loops' that actually change behavior.
Punishment vs. Education
For a neurotypical brain, the fear of "Getting in trouble" is a strong motivator. For an ADHD brain, that fear often leads to Shutdown or Rage, not "Better Behavior."
Why Punishment Fails:
ADHD is characterized by Time-Blindness. If you take away a toy in the evening for something that happened at noon, the brain cannot "Connect" the action and the consequence. It just feels like "Random Cruelty."
The Reward System:
High Frequency: Give 5 positive comments for every 1 correction. *"I love how you sat down,"* *"Great job finding your shoes."*
Immediacy: Use a "Token Jar." When they do something good, drop a coin in the jar Immediately. The sound and sight of the coin provide the dopamine hit they need to "Want to do it again."
