Rejecting the Educational System: School Refusal in Children
Why 'not wanting to go to school' in children with ADHD and Autism is not spoiled behavior, but a nervous system breakdown caused by sensory overload and masking fatigue.
The Sensory Minefield
School Refusal among children with ADHD and Autism is rarely a matter of spoiled defiance or lack of discipline. A noisy classroom of 30 students, bright fluorescent lights, unpredictable peer dynamics, and demands to sit motionless form a sensory minefield.
A neurodivergent child spends 6 to 8 hours daily engaging in heavy masking. Upon returning home, their battery is fully drained. Morning stomachaches, vomiting, or crying fits are genuine physiological alarms generated by a dysregulated nervous system attempting to avoid sensory trauma.
Forcing a child into an unaccommodated environment deepens trauma. The path forward requires working with schools to implement sensory accommodations and reduced demands.
