Red Flags in a Therapist: Navigating ND Care
Identifying warning signs that your therapist might not understand neurodivergence or is practicing outdated models.
Signs of a Non-Affirming Therapist
Not all therapists are equipped to handle the neurodivergent brain. Some may unintentionally cause "Therapeutic Trauma" by applying neurotypical standards to your biological reality.
Watch out for these Red Flags:
"Have you tried using a planner?" (As if you haven't tried 50 of them). This shows a lack of understanding of executive dysfunction.
Enforced Eye Contact: Forcing you to look at them when it causes you sensory pain.
"We all get a little distracted": Minimizing your disability by comparing it to common human experiences.
Focus on 'Normalcy': Encouraging you to "hide" your traits or "mask" better to fit into society.
A good therapist for you will be Neuro-Affirming—they will help you find systems that work for *your* brain, not try to change the brain itself.
