Psychodermatology: The Mind-Skin Connection
How- ADHD stress, sensory sensitivities, and 'Skin Picking' (Dermatillomania) are linked to the nervous system.
Skin as a Nervous System Output
Your skin and your brain are formed from the same layer of tissue (the Ectoderm) in the womb. They are Biologically Connected.
For neurodivergent people, this connection is often "Loud":
1. Skin Picking (BFRB): Many people with ADHD or Autism pick at their skin, cuticles, or acne as a way to "Self-Soothe" or "Wake up the brain" (Stimming). It isn't "Self-harm"—it is Dysregulated Stimulation.
2. Tactile Overload: The feeling of a "Tight" jeans waistband or a "Scratchy" tag can lead to an entire day of Irritability. Your brain is spending 50% of its energy trying to "Ignore" the skin feeling.
Management:
Fidget Replacements: Use a "Pick-stone" or a textured toy to replace the skin-picking behavior.
Sensory Clothing: Switch to "Tagless" and soft fabrics (like bamboo). If your skin is calm, your brain can be calm.
