What is Polyvagal Theory?
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, is a revolutionary model that describes how our nervous system responds to stress and social connection. While the traditional view divides the nervous system into only "Fight or Flight" (Sympathetic) and "Rest and Digest" (Parasympathetic), Polyvagal Theory defines a third and very critical pathway: The Social Engagement System.
According to this theory, our nervous system operates in a hierarchical structure. Our brain constantly scans the environment without us even realizing it; this process is called Neuroception. If the environment is safe, our social engagement system is activated. When a threat is perceived, the system reverts to older defense modes.

Three Core Nervous System States
1. Ventral Vagal Mode (Safety and Social Bonding)
This is the most modern part of the parasympathetic system. It is active when we feel "safe" in our bodies. Heart rate is steady, breathing is calm. In this mode, we can connect with others, learn, and express our creativity. For neurodivergent individuals, finding and maintaining this mode is the key to regulation.
2. Sympathetic Mode (Fight or Flight)
When a threat is perceived, the body mobilizes. Heart rate accelerates, muscles tense. In ADHD individuals, this mode can often manifest as "hyperfocus" or "chronic anxiety." It becomes difficult to read social cues correctly in this mode because the mind is focused on survival.
3. Dorsal Vagal Mode (Freeze and Shutdown)
If the threat is too great and fighting or fleeing does not seem possible, the nervous system resorts to its oldest defense mechanism: Shutdown. In this case, the body cuts energy, and numbness (Emotional Blunting) begins. The state of heavy exhaustion experienced after a meltdown is usually a Dorsal Vagal collapse.
Neurodiversity and Polyvagal Awareness

Understanding polyvagal theory allows us to see that the crises we experience are not a "character weakness" but a biological defense response of the nervous system. When we can identify our own nervous system state, we can more easily choose the right tools (the right sensory stimuli, safe spaces) to transition from dorsal to ventral.
