People Pleasing and the Fawning Response
When kindness is a trauma response: Understanding the 'Fawn' mechanism to avoid conflict and rejection.
When Pleasing is a Shield
We all know Fight, Flight, and Freeze. But for many neurodivergent people, Fawning is the most common survival mode.
The Fawn Response is the act of over-complying, being "too nice," and abandoning your own boundaries to ensure that another person isn't angry with you. Because many with ADHD and Autism grew up being "wrong" or "too much," they learned that their only safety was to be "Perfectly Helpful."
The Cost: Over time, you lose contact with your own "No." You agree to things that make you miserable just to avoid the perceived threat of a frown. Healing involves the terrifying but necessary work of being "Impermissible"—allowing yourself to be the person who says *"No, I can't do that"* and surviving the discomfort that follows.
