Occupational Therapist (OT) Strategies for Home
Using- environmental engineering to reduce executive load and increase safety in daily routines.
Engineering the Daily Life
An Occupational Therapist (OT) looks at "Occupations"—which are just the activities of daily life. For an ADHD/Autistic brain, these simple tasks are often the hardest.
Three OT Pillars for Your Home:
1. Affordance: The environment should "Tell you what to do." A clear bin with "Socks" written on it Affords putting socks in it. A dark, opaque drawer hides them and leads to "Objective Blindness."
2. Proprioceptive Support: If you feel "fidgety" or tired while working, your body might need more physical input. Try a Weighted Lap Pad or a foot-rocker while sitting.
3. Visual Scaffolding: Instead of a "To-Do" list, use Object Cues. Place your running shoes ON the coffee table. The physical object is a prompt that the brain cannot "Delete" as easily as an email.
