Neurodivergent Parenting Strategies
Managing- the challenges of being an ADHD/Autistic parent and raising neurodivergent children simultaneously.
Regulating the Regulators
A neurodivergent family is a high-energy system. When a child has a meltdown, it often triggers the parent's own sensory sensitivities, leading to two dysregulated people.
The ND Parenting Framework:
1. Sensory Checks: If the house feels "Chaotic," check the volume. Turn off the TV. Dim the lights. Half of the "Behavior problems" in a family are actually Sensory Overload.
2. Collaborative Problem Solving: Instead of "My way or the highway," ask: *"What is making this task hard for you right now?"* This builds the child's Metacognition.
3. Validation First: *"I see that your brain is having a hard time stopping the game. It is really hard for me too."* This connection stops the "Shame Cycle" before it starts.
