Neural Targets of Psychiatric Treatment
Looking- under the hood: How medication and therapy target the Prefrontal Cortex and Amygdala.
Where the Treatment Happens
When we talk about "Treating ADHD," we are really talking about Regulating Brain Regions.
1. The Prefrontal Cortex (PFC): This is your "Inner Manager." In ADHD, the PFC is under-active. Medication acts as "Electricity" for the manager, giving them the power to say *"Shut up"* to distractions.
2. The Amygdala: This is the "Fear Center." It's often hyper-active in ADHD, leading to "Mood Swings" and "Intense Anxiety." Therapy (like CBT/ACT) targets this area, teaching it that "Missing a deadline" is not a "Lethal Threat."
3. The Striatum: This is the "Dopamine Vault." It's responsible for Motivation. Treatment here helps you feel the "Small Reward" of washing a dish, making it easier to start boring tasks.
