How delays in fine or gross motor skills can impact a neurodivergent person's sense of independence and executive function development.
The Body-Mind Connection
For many AuDHD individuals, the brain's internal "software" for coordination is slightly different. This can manifest as Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder), leading to "clumsiness," difficulty with fine motor tasks like handwriting or tying shoelaces, and poor spatial awareness (bumping into things).
While these may seem like minor physical issues, they have a profound impact on Autonomy. When a child (or adult) repeatedly fails at physical tasks that others find easy, they may internalize the belief that they are "incapable." If parents or caregivers always "do it for them" because it's faster, it can lead to Learned Helplessness, where the individual stops trying to gain independence.
Scaffolding for Autonomy:
The goal is not to force "perfect coordination," but to provide tools that enable independence.
1. Adaptive Tools: Use velcro shoes, elastic laces, or electric toothbrushes to remove the "motor barrier."
2. Occupational Therapy: Focusing on functional success rather than "fixing" the coordination.
3. Positive Schemas: Celebrating the effort of trying a physical task, regardless of the "neatness" of the result, to build a self-schema of competence.
