What is Monotropism?
Monotropism is a theory developed by autistic researchers (such as Dinah Murray, Wenn Lawson, and Mike Lesser) that explains the autistic mind as being organized around a single-interest focus strategy. While a neurotypical mind might be polytropic (able to scatter attention across multiple interests/tasks simultaneously), the monotropic mind concentrates its limited "attention resources" into a few, deep tunnels.
This is why transitions are so difficult. Shifting from one "interest tunnel" to another requires a massive amount of mental energy and time. It is not just about "being stubborn"; it is a structural reality of how information is prioritized in the brain.

The monotropic "tunnel" provides incredible benefits, such as the ability to enter Flow states where learning and productivity are heightened. Furthermore, this intense focus acts as a filter against external sensory chaos. However, disrupting this flow (sudden interruptions) is experienced as a physical and sensory shock. Respecting "the tunnel" and providing structured, predictable warning times before transitions is the most neuro-affirming way to support a monotropic individual.

Monotropic flow is a key generator of autistic joy and neural regulation. Instead of running on importance, urgency, or social rewards, this interest-based nervous system thrives on passion and curiosity. However, when an individual's focus is repeatedly broken by external tasks or masking demands, they experience a cognitive fragmentation known as "monotropic split."
If this split is sustained, the autonomic nervous system enters a state of chronic hypervigilance known as "meerkat mode." In meerkat mode, the individual is constantly on high alert, waiting for the next disruption. This drains energy reserves and leads directly to autistic burnout, meltdowns, or shutdowns.
