What is Monotropism?
Monotropism, developed in 2005 by autistic researchers Dinah Murray, Wenn Lawson, and Mike Lesser, is one of the most powerful theories explaining autistic cognitive structure and way of experiencing the world. While classical psychiatry defines autism as a "restriction of interests," Monotropism theory treats it not as a "disorder," but as a "difference" in how attention energy is managed.
A monotropic mind, instead of distributing its limited mental energy to many topics at once (polytropism), channels it deeply into a single topic or stimulus. While this allows the individual to gain immense expertise and depth in the area of focus, it causes all other information outside the focus area (social signals, physical needs, etc.) to drop off the brain's radar.

The Attention Tunnel and Flow Experience
The most prominent feature of the monotropic mind is the creation of an "attention tunnel." The individual enters the tunnel when engaged in a task of special interest (coding, painting, researching, etc.). At this stage, a wonderful flow experience occurs: the perception of time disappears, feelings of hunger or thirst are suppressed, and external sounds are filtered by the brain (the individual does not hear when called; this is a neurological state, not intentional disrespect).
Dr. Cengiz Arca states that pulling a monotropic individual out of the attention tunnel abruptly (e.g., saying "Shut down the computer now, come to dinner") has a physical collision effect on the nervous system. When the tunnel collapses suddenly, the individual may feel intense disorientation, anxiety, and anger. In children, this can result in a meltdown.

Managing a Monotropic Mind in Daily Life
To facilitate the daily life of individuals (or children) with a monotropic mind, attention transitions must be managed correctly. The nervous system must be allowed time to prepare when moving from one activity to another. For example, verbal and visual warnings such as "We will turn off the computer and leave the house in 10 minutes" facilitate the transition.
In addition, special interests should not be seen merely as "hobbies." These interests are safe havens where the monotropic mind escapes scattered stimulation throughout the day, rests, and regulates the nervous system. Rather than restricting the time the individual spends in the attention tunnel, structuring these periods in balance with other daily responsibilities is the healthiest approach.
