Metacognition: The Observer in Your Mind
Developing- 'Self-Monitoring' skills: How to notice when you've drifted into a distraction before you lose an hour.
Who is Watching the Watcher?
Metacognition is the ability to monitor your own performance while you are doing it. It is your "Inner CEO" looking at your "Action Self" and saying: *"Hey, you've been on this one sentence for 20 minutes. We need to take a break."*
In ADHD, this "Inner CEO" is often asleep.
You might enter Hyper-focus on a tiny detail (like picking the 'Perfect' font) and spend 3 hours on it. You only realize the "Error" when the sun goes down or someone yells your name. This is a Metacognitive Blind Spot.
Building the Observation Muscle:
Mindful Chimes: Use an app that makes a "Ding" every 15 minutes. This "Ding" is for your CEO. It asks: *"What are we doing right now? Is this the priority?"*
Questioning the Stuckness: If you find yourself "Frozen" at your desk, say out loud: *"I notice that I am stuck. This strategy is failing. What is a different way to start?"*
