Masked Potential: 2e in Adulthood
How high intelligence can disguise neurodivergence for decades, leading to late diagnosis and professional burnout.
The Cost of High-IQ Compensation
Many 2e adults go undiagnosed until their 30s or 40s. Why? Because their high intelligence acted as a massive "Compensation Engine." If they had trouble organizing a paper in college, they stayed up all night and used sheer brain-power to finish it. To the outside world, they were high-achievers. Internally, they were in a state of perpetual emergency.
This is what we call The Masking Debt. Eventually, the interest on this debt becomes too high. As professional and family responsibilities increase in mid-life, the "brute force" method of using IQ to fix ADHD/Autism struggles fails. The result is often a severe Neuro-Burnout that looks like depression but is actually neurological exhaustion.

Rewriting the Adult Narrative
The most damaging phrase for a 2e adult is: *"You have so much potential, if only you tried harder."* This phrase creates a deep Internalized Shame, as the individual *is* trying harder than anyone else, but still struggles with "simple" things like bills, emails, or sensory overload.
The Path Forward:
1. Grieve the Lost Potential: It's okay to be angry and sad about the years you spent fighting your own brain.
2. Externalize the Scaffolding: Stop trying to "think" your way out of a messy desk—use tech, assistants, and visual tools.
3. Find Your Niche: 2e adults thrive in careers that value deep, systemic thought and high-intensity problem solving, rather than routine administration.
