Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

Understanding the right for neurodivergent students to be educated alongside their peers with appropriate supports.

Inclusion is a Right, Not a Privilege

The Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is a core principle of inclusive education. It means that a student with ADHD or Autism should spend as much time as possible in a "regular" education classroom with their peers.

The Strategy of Support:

Don't Move the Child, Move the Support: Instead of sending a child to a "special room" for focus, give them noise-cancelling headphones and a standing desk in the main classroom.

Social Integration: Learning alongside neurotypical peers is vital for social development and reducing the stigma of "being different."

Flexibility: If a child *needs* a quiet space for 1 hour a day, that is also a part of LRE. The goal is the *least* restriction necessary for their success.
