Initiation and the Wall of Fear
Breaking through the 'Emotional Barrier' that prevents you from beginning high-stakes tasks.
The Wall of Awful
Brendan Mahan (from *ADDitude*) created the concept of "The Wall of Awful."
Every time you failed to finish a paper, every time you were yelled at for a mistake, you added a "brick" of Shame and Fear to this invisible wall. Now, when you see a blank page, you don't just see a task—you see all those past failures staring back at you.
How to get past the Wall:
1. Don't ignore the wall: Acknowledge that you are feeling Fear. This isn't about the task; it's about the history.
2. Lower the Stakes: Tell yourself: *"I am going to write the worst paragraph in human history."* By removing the need for "Quality," the wall loses its power to stop you.
3. Use a 'Social Ladder': Ask a friend to sit with you (Body Doubling). Their presence acts as a "Ladder" that helps you climb over the emotional wall.
