Hyper-Independence and Trauma
Why many neurodivergent people feel they 'must do everything alone' as a defense mechanism against past failure or judgment.
Independence as Armor
For many with ADHD or Autism, Hyper-Independence is a survival strategy. After years of being told that our different way of doing things is "wrong" or "slow," we conclude that asking for help is dangerous. If we ask for help, we risk being criticized, misunderstood, or "fixed."
So, we build an armor of "I don't need anyone." We take on 100% of the burden to prove we are "competent." This is a trauma response. It stems from a childhood where our support needs were either ignored or shamed.
The Cost: While you may appear successful or "strong," you are actually living in a state of chronic burnout. Vulnerability feels like a threat, and the weight of the world sits entirely on your shoulders. Healing begins when you realize that interdependence—needing others and letting them need you—is not a weakness, but a biological necessity.
