Hyper-Focus and 'Cooling' in Relationships
Navigating the transition from the intense 'Special Interest' stage of dating to long-term stability.
When the Special Interest Ends
In the early stages of dating, an ADHD brain is flooded with dopamine. The new partner becomes a "Special Interest." The focus is intense, romantic, and all-consuming.
Eventually, the novelty wears off. This is The Cooling Phase. To the partner, it feels like the ADHD person has "flipped a switch" and stopped caring. To the ADHD person, they are simply returning to a state where they can focus on work, hobbies, and other things again.
The Solution: Don't wait for "spontaneous" romance. In a long-term ADHD relationship, planned novelty is the only way to keep the dopamine flowing without the crash. Scheduled dates, new shared hobbies, and regular "connection checks" prevent the partner from feeling like they've been "archived."
