Honesty and the Transparency Balance
Navigating the fine line between 'Radical Authenticity' and social tact in neurodiverse interactions.
The Truth as a Default
For many on the ADHD and Autistic spectra, Honesty isn't just a moral choice; it is a neurological default. Lying or using "social white lies" requires a high amount of executive function (keeping two versions of reality in mind) and often feels physically "wrong."
This can lead to a Transparency Paradox. While being honest is a great virtue, being "bluntly honest" in the wrong social context can be perceived as an attack. Learning the balance involves realizing that transparency should be a tool for Clarity and Connection, not a weapon.
Pro-tip: If you aren't sure if your honesty will hurt someone, use the "Think" rule: Is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind? If it's only "True," it might need a re-phrasing.
