Ferrari Engine, Bicycle Brakes
Dr. Edward Hallowell's most famous metaphor explaining the ADHD brain.
Controlling the Power
"You've got a Ferrari engine, but the brakes of a bicycle." This metaphor captures the essence of ADHD. Your brain is extremely fast, creative, and generates ideas with high energy (The Engine). However, when you need to slow down, focus, or shift gears, the brakes (Executive Functions) struggle to control that speed.
The goal is not to slow down the engine, but to strengthen the brakes. Medication and strategic tools provide the braking power needed to keep this Ferrari on the track.

Strengthening the Brakes
Strengthening the brakes involves meditation, medication, strategic rest, and environmental supports (your "external brain"). Trying to drive a Ferrari in city traffic will burn out the engine; however, on a racetrack (the right career and lifestyle), that speed becomes an indispensable advantage.
Instead of trying to slow your brain down, focus on finding the right "tracks" for it and developing techniques for safe stops. This is the key to success with ADHD.
