Emotional Regulation and Energy Management
Strategies for managing the intensity of emotions and daily energy fluctuations characteristic of ADHD and neurodivergence.
Our Daily Energy Budget
For neurodivergent individuals, energy is not linear (decreasing steadily); it is fluctuating and volatile. An emotional outburst or an intense session of hyperfocus can consume an entire day's energy budget in just one hour. This phenomenon is often called the "Emotional Tax."
Core Strategies:
1. Acceptance: Viewing emotions as "passing waves" rather than permanent states of being.
2. Peak Mapping: Identifying the specific windows throughout the day when your energy is highest (often late nights or early mornings).
3. The Sensory Reset: Implementing mandatory "quiet breaks" after emotional overloads to reset the nervous system before it hits a total shutdown.
