Emotional Dysregulation in Small Events
Why minor incidents (spilling coffee, losing keys) can trigger massive emotional responses in ADHD/AuDHD brains.
The Final Straw Effect
Have you ever burst into tears because you couldn't find a matching pair of socks? To the outside observer, this looks like an "overreaction." In the ADHD world, we call this The Final Straw Effect.
Your brain has been managing a thousand invisible tasks all day—masking your symptoms, struggling with focus, fighting sensory noise. Your "Emotional Bucket" is full to the brim. When that final small event (the socks) happens, the bucket overflows. It's not about the socks; it's about the Systemic Pressure of the entire day.
Regulation Tip: When the "small thing" triggers a "big reaction," stop. Recognize that your system is full. Don't fight the emotion—acknowledge that your brain is exhausted and needs a period of low-demand rest.
