Double Empathy and Info-Dumping
How 'Info-Dumping' is actually a love language for monotropic individuals, and the solution to the 'Double Empathy Problem'.
Communication as Shared Tunnels
For a monotropic individual, social connection often happens through Special Interests (SPINs). When someone "info-dumps"—sharing massive amounts of information about a niche topic—they aren't being self-centered. In the monotropic world, this is a Love Language. It is an invitation into their most sacred "Attention Tunnel."
The Double Empathy Problem, defined by Dr. Damian Milton, explains that communication failures between autistic and neurotypical people aren't due to autistic "deficits," but a mutual lack of understanding between two different neurological operating systems. Neurotypicals may find info-dumping overwhelming, while monotropic individuals may find neurotypical "small talk" confusing and shallow.
Effective communication requires acknowledging that both styles are valid. Connecting through a shared interest (Object-Focused Connection) allows a monotropic person to feel seen and valued without the high cost of masking.
