Domestic Mental Load: The Invisible Work
Balancing the household 'Brain-Work' (planning, tracking, deciding) in a neurodiverse marriage.
Who is the 'Project Manager'?
In most households, there is a Project Manager. This is the person who remembers that today is trash day, that the kid needs a costume for school, and that the milk is almost empty. This is the Mental Load.
For neurodivergent families, the ADHD partner often "does the dishes" but only when asked. This forces the other partner into the role of "Director." The result? The Director feels like a "Nag," and the ADHD partner feels like a "Worker."
The Shift: Move from "Chores" to "Complete Ownership."
Instead of *"I'll do the laundry if you tell me when,"* the ADHD partner takes ownership of the entire "Laundry Cycle": Knowing when it's dirty, washing it, drying it, and putting it away. This removes the Mental Load from the partner and places it on a system (alarms, routine days).
