Dissociation as a Core Defense Mechanism
Dissociation, at its core, is a temporary mental and perceptual detachment the brain uses to escape overwhelming trauma, stress, or sensory input. Because neurodivergent individuals possess highly sensitive nervous systems that experience the world with great intensity, the constant struggle to mask in a neurotypical world and survive sensory bombardment generates chronic stress.
In these moments, the autonomic nervous system enters a "freeze" or "fawn" survival state. The individual may feel detached from their physical body (depersonalization) or perceive the external world through a thick fog, as if watching a flat, artificial movie set (derealization). This state is not an illness; it is a magnificent self-preservation reflex of an overloaded nervous system.

Shifting from Dissociation to Regulation: Somatic Tools
Telling someone experiencing dissociation to "think logically" or "snap out of it" yields no clinical benefit. During dissociation, the logical left forebrain (prefrontal cortex) is in energy-saving mode, and the primitive hindbrain has taken complete control of the system. This is why traditional cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT), which rely heavily on cognitive processing, stall at this stage.
The solution is to communicate "safety" directly to the autonomic nervous system at a somatic (body) level. Slow, deep belly breaths that stimulate the vagus nerve, holding ice in the palm of your hand, splashing cold water on your face (triggering the mammalian dive reflex), and using weighted blankets to restore a sense of physical boundaries are highly effective, neuro-affirming somatic interventions.
