Discursive Inflation and the Trivialization of ADHD
How the popularization of 'ADHD' as a social media buzzword can lead to the trivialization of a serious neurological disability.
When Everything is 'ADHD'
In recent years, the term "ADHD" has exploded in popularity on social media. While this has helped many people discover their neurodivergence, it has also led to a phenomenon called Discursive Inflation. This occurs when the term is used so broadly—to describe common human experiences like "being distracted by a phone" or "losing a pen"—that it loses its clinical meaning.
This trivialization of ADHD can be deeply harmful to those who actually live with the condition. When someone says, "Oh, everyone has a little ADHD," they are effectively invalidating the chronic, debilitating executive dysfunction that prevents an ADHD person from maintaining employment, managing finances, or regulating their emotions.
The Reality of ADHD:
ADHD is not just "forgetting keys." it is a profound deficiency in the brain's reward and inhibition systems. It is "Time Blindness" that destroys careers. It is "Emotional Dysregulation" that ruins relationships. It is a biological disability that requires structural support, not just "trying harder."
We must maintain a balance: celebrating neurodivergent identity while simultaneously honoring the very real challenges and disabilities that come with it.
